An eco-friendly kitchen doesn’t end with healthy or organic foods. It also includes environmentally friendly food preparation processes and kitchen habits. It also includes using utensils, equipment and appliances that are made out of reliable materials – preferably recycled. Fortunately, creating an eco-friendly kitchen does not only encourage you to make the right choices for your own health and well-being but also reduces your ecological footprint.

Below are some simple suggestions on how to create an eco-friendly kitchen.

Pick Out Good Quality Cookware and Utensils

Choosing appliances, utensils and cookware that are of high quality will certainly help you have an eco-friendly kitchen. Make sure that your utensils and equipment can stand the test of time.  Although you might feel that there are benefits to using non-stick pans, it is better to opt for cast iron pans or skillets instead. They may cost a bit more than the non-stick pans, but you will benefit from purchasing them in the long run. Cast iron pans can last you a lifetime. Think about the money you will save!

People often tend to purchase utensils based on the price – the cheaper the better.  However, utensils of great quality are better than cheap kitchen tools that will not last too long. Pick out wooden spoons instead of plastic ones, purchase good quality knives and opt for cloth towels.

Getting Appliances Upgrades

You have probably heard of appliance upgrades. Indeed, you can get your kitchen equipment upgraded to be more efficient. You will save more energy and water if your appliances are more efficient. Do not assume, however, that a particular appliance requires upgrade the minute it stops performing the same way it did before. Check first if it needs repair before you get it upgraded. Also, if it’s not functional, your upgrade expense may be wasted.

Purchase Locally Produced Products

“Food miles” is a new term related to an eco-friendly kitchen. Basically, this is a concept that promotes purchasing foods that are produced locally, so the fewer the miles between your farm and your house, the better. You will certainly help in reducing the wastes produced by the transport of non-locally produced products. Think of the gas emissions caused by the transport of grapes from Italy.

If you are really serious about creating an eco-friendly kitchen, you should also opt for organic foods. It is hardly difficult to purchase organic foods if they are produced in a foreign country. It is unreasonable to expect that such foods will have no preservatives.

An eco-friendly kitchen is important to a chef like you. This is why it is important to know how you can start creating one.
