With 181 deaths on the list, the Australian bushfire in Victoria is now searching for arsonists. It was confirmed February 10 that arsonists may be involved in fires from Churchill, but all fire sites are being slowly inspected by fire and arson experts. The inspectors are optimistic that they will find out what happened during that horrible weekend.
As of this writing, 100 are injured and are being treated in hospitals. 20 are in critical condition, and 9 are on life support and intensive care. This tragedy is the worst fire that Australia has ever seen.
The source of the fire from initial findings was a heat wave and a lighting strike. However, it was confirmed in Gippsland that an arsonist must have started some of the fires. There are also confirmed evidence that cigarette butts started some fires in Bendigo. 21 people have been found dead in the Gippsland fire while the Bendigo fire killed 1 when the blaze changed directions to Eaglehawk, another 10 died at unspecified locations.
According to the police, they will soon reveal a photofit of the suspected arsonist. A squad has also been formed to inspect and examine the fire sites for possibility of arson or other reasons for the origin of the fires. The 25 man team are also expected to examine all the fire related deaths.
There are already 2 arson investigations going on in Churchill.
Debates on fire policy are heating up in the governance side of Australia. Victorian Premiere, John Brumby suggested that the ‘stay-and-defend-or-leave-early’ will be reviewed. Accordingly, this method is effective but was rendered useless because of the exceptional nature of the February 7 fires. A forced evacuation policy is being considered and studied, however, Victorian Police Minister, Pat McNamara said that it may not be a good idea since some people killed in the fire were inside their cars attempting to evacuate the area.
