A US Airways jetliner with 150 passengers and 5 crew members plunged into the icy Hudson River on Thursday afternoon less than five minutes after taking off from the New York, LaGuardia Airport. The flight was designated as flight 1549.

America and the whole world watched in horror as the accident happened. A major flock of geese collided with the airbus and damaged both engines. It was covered by every major media outlet out there because the prospect of survivors was bleak.

They were wrong.

Surprisingly, as the plane was slowly sinking into the historic river, people began to claw their way out of the doomed airplane and into the floating wings of the craft. The world watched in awe as still more people trickled out of the crashed plane. It was a miracle!

The miracle worker was Captain Chesley Sullenberger III. Sully to his friends and co-workers. He was the captain of the Airbus A320. A veteran safety expert with over 40 years of flying experience, Sullenberger displayed bravery and decisiveness that saved the passengers of his airbus.

It is not all too uncommon that people disregard airline workers and hospitality workers, but we have to understand that sometimes these people, especially the pilot, hold our life in their hands. They are trained professionals that will make sure of your own safety instead of their own. As demonstrated by Captain Sullenberger when he roamed the sinking airbus twice to make sure that no passenger was left behind inside.

His landing maneuver was called by many as “masterful” and his decision making was made unbelievably fast and sound. And why not? Captain Sullenberger is a professional safety expert and accident investigator. If anyone was going to help those people get out of the ordeal alive, it was the good Captain.

By 3:31 PM the Airbus A320 landed safely on the Hudson River. All passengers and crew members survived. Fellow pilots were not surprised at Captain Sullenberger’s cool decision making. He was highly regarded as an unbelievable professional and a cool hand. His years of experience and his expertise as a pilot, plus his own compassion for other people’s well-being have been well demonstrated in this incident.

As the passengers were trickling out of airbus, the quick response of the rescue ferries helped a lot to bring the people to safety. It should be noted that this is not the first water landing ever done; however, this must be the biggest craft to land in water without any casualties.

A Fan Page was set up to honour Capt Sully on Facebook and with well over 500,000 fans and growing daily. It seems that Captain Sully is getting the recognition that he very well deserves.
