I recently flew from Male to Kuala Lumpur on a pleasure trip. I want to point out the mere fact that in this digital age it still can be extremely challenging to get even the most basic of information on demand.

I was sitting towards the back of the Boeing 737-800. I was trying to look at the few watches on the arms of the people sitting in the nearby seats.

Oh my; it is amazing how many different times were being displayed on the various watches that were in sight.

I forgot to mention that I stopped wearing a watch when the cell phone phenomenon hit earth.

Maybe I should consider purchasing a battery operated travel clock for future travel to avoid a similar dilemma from occurring. Or alternatively a solar powered cell phone might do the trick……..

Finally to solve the issue I asked the air stewardess to kindly let me know what the time is. She politely answered the question.

Happy travelling

PS- You might be wondering what an “air sickness bag” has got to do with a clock. To cut a long story short I wrote the draft of this very article on the back of an air sickness bag due to the shortage of a piece of paper.

Travelers and tourists naturally love to sample local cuisine whenever they travel.  A traveler’s palate is almost up for anything.  They will even try Philippines’ infamous balut – chick, feathers, bones and all.  This is just fine, but you still need to observe food safety when traveling.  Your stomach may not do well with the food.

Your Stomach May Not Like It

Your food may not necessarily be cleaner than foreign foods.  It is also not safer than foods abroad.  It is, however, something that your stomach is used too.  It is something that your body may have developed immunity to bacteria that it may contain.  You may not, however, be immune to bacteria that foreign foods may have.  Natural fertilizers used to grown foreign foods may contain bacteria that could cause stomach upset or intestinal distress.  This is something commonly experienced by travelers or tourists who do not observe food safety.

There are risks that you have to take note of when traveling and eating foreign foods.  It is a good idea to monitor these risks by regularly visiting the World Health Organization (WHO) and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) websites.  You will find updated outbreaks information in these websites.  You should also make sure that you get the necessary immunization or shots before you fly abroad.  You should also keep yourself updated with the local news.

What Not to Eat or Drink Abroad

To protect yourself from diseases though, it is a good idea to know the things that you should not eat or drink when you are abroad.  For instance, do not just drink tap water when you are in a foreign country.  Do not assume that just because the locals drink it without experiencing any intestinal problems that you can do the same.  Food safety includes water safety as well, so make sure that you opt for bottled water when you are in a foreign country.

Always opt for freshly cooked foods.   Avoid raw foods like salads.  However, you can eat fruits or vegetables that you can peel yourself.  Otherwise, it is always a good idea to opt for foods that are freshly cooked.  Make sure that you have your foods “well done”.  It is better to eat your order portions when served hot.  These foods are safer.  If you are going to use condiments, make sure that you choose products that come in sealed packages.  Unsealed packages are often home to bacteria which are notorious for causing stomach upsets and intestinal problems.

No matter how enticingly good seafood dishes looked, you should definitely avoid them.  Small fish dishes that are freshly cooked may be safe, but avoid other seafood organs like clams, oysters and mussels.

If you must eat or drink dairy products, make sure that you get pasteurized products.  Avoid unpasteurized cheese, yogurt or milk.  Canned milk in grocery stores, however, may be safe.  Avoid adding milk to your coffee.  If you must have coffee, opt to have black coffee.  That way, you can avoid drinking contaminated milk.

These are a few simple tips on how to observe food safety when traveling.
