PS: Many sexy and smart people have realized that clicking the Facebook like button and/ or the twitter retweet button on this page gets them free promotion ;-)

If you think that Twitter is only for friends updating friends or celebrities updating their fans, think again.  Right now, Twitter is one of the fastest growing media that the food and restaurant industry utilize to get their names out there.  Food truck owners use it to alert their “followers” where they will be; restaurants use it to update their “followers” of their latest offerings; and even chefs use Twitter to interact with their “followers.”

Now, if you are a chef with an online business or a blog to promote, then you really have to take advantage of the full potentials of Twitter.  Here are five ways that can help you be a better chef, online and off, through the use of Twitter.

Three Twitter Tips for Online Use

As a chef with something to promote, you will need to build connections that are related to your interest.  Now, Twitter allows you to easily look for people who have the same interest as you do, and you only have to “follow” them.  If you are having a hard time looking for such people, then you could take advantage of “wefollow.”  Simply enter a tag in their search bar, say for example “chef,” and you will be given a list of chefs who use Twitter.  You can choose them based on the number of their followers or based on their importance.  Chances are, some of them will “follow” you back.

Now that you have “followed” people and is being “followed” by people with the same interests as you have, the next thing that you have to do is to subscribe to their food blogs.  More often than not, chefs will “tweet” about their blogs and post tidbits of their current articles.  You only have to click the link to be taken to their blogs or websites.  Once there, you can bookmark their sites and then subscribe to their blog updates in order to receive any new updates about their blogs.  Make sure though to use your own Twitter in promoting your site or blog, so do what they are doing.  “Tweet” away and update your followers of new articles in your blog.  More importantly, encourage them to subscribe to your blog by showing them, in 140 characters or less, how relevant your blog is to their needs.

The next step to do once you have built your Twitter connections and subscribed to blogs is to give your Twitter more personality.  What this means is that you have to connect with your followers by “tweeting” interesting and engaging things.  If all your “tweets” are about new updates in your blog or encouragement to subscribe to it, then you run the risk of becoming boring to your “followers.”  What you need to do is to show your personality through your “tweets.”  Ask them about their recent food cravings or what they plan to have for dinner.  You can also ask them about tips and advices related to cooking, and you can even ask them to share their recipes.  It may come as a surprise to you, but you will find out that the Twitter foodie world is a very helpful community.

Two Twitter Tips for Offline Use

You can use Twitter not only for online purpose such as building your own online community or promoting your website or blog, but you can also use Twitter for offline purposes.  Here are two ways on how you can maximize the benefits of Twitter offline.

Are you going to visit a new place and want to know where you can have a great snack or meal?  Then why not use the advanced Twitter search or LocaFollow?  You only have to fill up the fields to be given a list of fellow foodies in the area that you will be visiting.  Simply “follow” them to get good tips on where to dine when you get to the town.  Chances are, they are “tweeting” about the best meal that they have had at this restaurant or that café.  You can even send them messages privately to ask for more details about the favorite restaurant or café in the area.

Are you in need of a new recipe for your restaurant or are you looking for an inspiration to create a unique dish for a private gathering?  If so, then why not read through your “tweet stream.”  There is a very big chance that your Twitter “friends” are “tweeting” their recipes on Twitter as much as they are “tweeting” about new blog updates, so click a recipe link and see if the dish sparks your interest and provides you with the inspiration you need to give the recipe your own twist.

Because others shared their recipes for others to enjoy, it is then your “moral online duty” to RT or retweet the recipe that you discovered.  That way, more people will come to enjoy the dish as you did.

Through these simple yet powerful ways of using Twitter, you can become a better chef, online and off.
