Be Aware of the Risks
Travelers often become ill because of contaminated water. Their immune system may be foreign to their immune system. Do not assume that just because the locals drink the water supply carelessly that you also can. Seasoned travelers know that they have to avoid drinking local tap water if they want to protect themselves against potential life-threatening diseases. Seasoned travelers know that it’s always safer to bet on bottled water. If bottled water is not available, it is always a good idea to boil tap water instead. This would at least kill the bacteria or microorganisms in the water. You can also bring water filters or purification tablets.
Some countries are more dangerous than others. You should be very careful if you are planning to travel to Mexico, Central America, Africa, Asia and Middle East. You should also be careful when traveling to Eastern Europe, South Africa, Chile, Argentina, Russia, Dominican Republic and some other areas of the Caribbean.
Water quality varies depending on where you are. It is safer in countries like the United State, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, United Kingdom and other developing countries. In some countries, water quality varies depending on where you are. If you are staying in 5-star hotel, you probably would not have to worry about drinking water safety. This may not be the case, however, if you are staying in a remote or rural village.
What Not to Drink
Drinking water safety includes knowing what not to drink when you travel. Bottled water, if sealed and tamper-proof, is basically safe. You should look for reliable brands however. You can also always drink tea, soda, beer, wine, coffee and other similar drinks. You might also want to drink hot water instead of cold water. When traveling, it is important that you always observe drinking water safety. By merely using contaminated water when brushing your teeth, you could end up taking in contaminated water yourself. You should also be careful when using water for cleaning your dentures or contact lenses. In truth, you should always observe drinking water safety measures when traveling.
