The Internet is now playing a major role in the hotel and restaurant industry.  Not only does it help get their names out there to attract more diners, but the Internet is also a great way of connecting with people, especially those who love and enjoy their meals and services.

In countries like Egypt that rely heavily on the tourist industry, the Internet has become a huge help in attracting potential diners into the restaurant.  Through the Internet, restaurants in Egypt have found a way to market themselves to tourists around the globe.  They created their own websites for their restaurants to showcase their menus and services; and they also made themselves known in social media sites such as Facebook and Twitter to reach more people and interact with more people.

However, the recent events that took place in Egypt have greatly affected not only the tourism industry but the hotel and restaurant industry as well.  Their Internet connection was cut off from the rest of the world that people in the country had trouble accessing the outside world via the World Wide Web.  Hotels and restaurants as well as other industries lost huge amounts of revenues because of the lost Internet connection, and it took a while for them to get back on their feet.

A Quick Look at the Egyptian Crisis

The people of Egypt, especially its youth, wanted change from their government, and when change was not given to them, they used the social media sites to show the rest of the world what is happening to them.  The government, in retaliation, ordered to shut the Internet down.  This angered the Egyptians all the more, and they took their grievances to the streets.

The crisis, the unstable atmosphere, and the Internet blackout have all affected the hotel and restaurant industry.  Flights and hotel room reservations were cancelled, and people became afraid of visiting Egypt.  The tourists who were already in Egypt booked the next flight out of the country, and those who stayed chose to remain inside their hotels.

Egypt protests internet shutdown.

With a huge amount of tourists gone, it follows that the restaurant industry also suffered.  Most of them closed their doors to the public, and when food shortage took place, they remained closed.  A lot of employees also lost their jobs in the hotel and restaurant industry because of the crisis.  After all, the management cannot sustain them all, what with no incoming profits.

Egypt Now

Egypt after the crisis.

There is still some unrest in the country, and the hotel and restaurant industry is still finding it hard to recover from the crisis.  Tourism is still down as many tourists are still choosing to visit other countries than Egypt.  Who can blame them, right?  They need to think of their safety, too.

However, there is hope though.  Their Internet connection is back, and the Egyptian hotel and restaurant industry has a way to reach its target client once more.  The process of recovering may be slow, but in time, things will settle down.  After all, the pyramids will always be there, and people will always want to see them.  These people will need a place to stay in and a place where they could get a sumptuous authentic Egyptian meal.
