Day Twenty-One: Lazy Sunday

There are many reasons why you should opt for locally grown produce.  There are many benefits attached to buying locally grown or manufactured products.  In truth, there is a growing trend promoting the preference for anything that is produced locally and this same trend is expected to continue in 2009.

Locally Grown Produce and Local Farming

Many people will argue that locally grown produce tastes better than imported products.  This is probably one of the best reasons why you should opt for locally grown produce.  Fruits and vegetables that have been grown locally tend to be healthier.  They also tend to be fresher.  You can even buy them from the farmers themselves.  You can even get the fruits while they are attached to the plants.

Buying Locally Grown Produce and Promoting Local Economy

This is one of the best reasons why you should buy locally grown produce because by doing this, you inevitably help your local economy.  Study shows that a dollar transferred locally tend to generate an income which is twice the value of the dollar.  The money will not leave the community.  It just transfers from one hand to another, so everyone in your community benefits from the transfer.

Isn’t It Obvious?  It’s Fresher!

A locally grow produce is arguably fresher than fruits or vegetables that have been imported.  The products that you will find in your supermarket are products that have been in cold storage for numerous days or weeks.  This is different from products that you purchase from your local farmer.  They are arguably fresher and so they taste immensely better.  An example is your locally-grown tomato.  An imported tomato is not as delicious as a newly-picked tomato.  This is another reason why locally grown produce lasts longer than imported products.  Because it is newly picked, it can survive longer than non-local products.

Helping the Environment with Locally Grown Produce

This is another reason why you should opt for locally grown produce.  You can certainly help the environment if you opt for products grown locally.  You will help in minimizing fuel cost and air pollution.  You will also avoid eating foods that have been exposed to potential contamination.  You also help local farmers maintain their farms productivity.  They can continue to operate if they have people buying their products.  Otherwise, they wouldn’t be able to maintain their farms.

There are many benefits to buying locally grown produce.  By getting fruits and vegetables that have been grown locally, you will be able to promote a healthy environment and rich local economy.
