Expansion of the Hospitality Industry- The Suffering of the Service Standard

The question about service standard is that is it really going on a downward trend because of the economic depression and down turn? Is it fair to criticize Asia’s low service standard in this trying economic times? Tourism has always been a money maker, cash cow for a lot of developing Asian countries. Has the lower service standard somehow affected tourism? Surely in the long run it will, but at this moment, is there an effect to the growing and booming tourism industry in Asia?
We are now nearing, if not already in a depression. The global economic trend analysis points directly to a depression. In fact, deflation has already affected a lot of countries. Unemployment is at an all time high. Tourism has been up, but of course, Asian countries are scrambling to address the growth of tourism by hiring hospitality workers. Aside from the massive hiring deficit in a lot of countries, there is also the lack of accommodation that must be addressed.
Service standards are also affected because of the lack of qualified hospitality workers. It is not a surprise and even self-explanatory to say that hiring problems are the main cause for these lower standards. In India alone, thousands of hospitality workers are needed and still restaurants and hotels over there are still seeking employees. They even needed the government to intervene just to solve the hospitality industry’s employment problems. The good news is that India is now training hundreds of hospitality workers. The question is, will this be enough for the future?
The biggest loser in this lower service standard must go to the local tourism industry in these countries. While a bit of foreign tourists are not going down significantly, local tourism is flowing very well. This sector is where all the low service standards are well visible. In places like China and the Philippines for example, airlines are at a cost cutting measure when it comes to local tourist services. Domestic flights can be quite miserable, and food on these airlines can be quite expensive.
The scarcity of hospitality employees can both be seen as a blessing and a curse. On one hand, tourism is booming because of the need for hospitality workers. On the other hand, developing countries are having trouble filling the positions primarily because of lack of expertise in this area. Developed countries are already stepping it up to grab on to this opportunity by building hundreds of hotels and accommodations in these developing countries.
Whether or not the service standards for these countries will go up in quality depends primarily on the available manpower. As of this time, hiring of foreign hospitality workers are still on going. Dubai alone is still searching for thousands of employees just to fill in positions as they create brand new tourist spots and hotels. This is good news for other Asian hospitality workers, but the question remains – Will brain drain affect the exporting country’s own service standard?
Time will tell.
