There is a saying that we should practice what we preach. Chefs are seen as the masters of food and eating. Yet, a lot of them do not exactly epitomize the person who knows what he eats and eats the right food. Thus, a complete and perfect chef needs to have both health and wisdom. Wisdom because for what else would he know how to be healthy and stay healthy!

Chefs are one of the busiest professionals, as surprising as they may seem. Chefs use their energies both for mental and physical activities. Mental activities include planning for the next menu, managing money and administrative matters of the profession and concocting new and refreshing recipes. Of course, the actual cooking is physical, add to this the physical stress of running around the busy kitchen cooking, supervising and catering to the boss’s or clients’ needs. All of this under time pressure – just imagine how stressful it can be, isn’t it?

For these reasons, chefs are also subjected to quite a handful of stress-related illnesses as much as any other fast-paced jobs. Nonetheless, chefs can still do something about this dilemma. Chefs can still have that health, which they require and deserve. Firstly, though, they should have wisdom.

Wisdom is different from being intellectual. Wisdom comes mostly from experience. However, it can also stem from knowing vital information. To use the information that you know in the right way and situation makes one wise. So to become wiser, one must first be open and even curious to information.

For chefs, the first information you must master is referring to food and nutrition. People have begun to be very conscious of healthy nowadays. These include ordinary people, the same people who would dine in the restaurants you serve for. So, it is essential that chefs know much about health too, and how to get and stay healthy accordingly.

Specifically, the job of chefs is to know how to eat healthy. He must have the wisdom to know what dishes to prepare that are both healthy and palatable. He must also be open to suggestions and criticisms to further lead to the improvement of his craft. A person who welcomes constructive critique is a wise person indeed.

He must always strive to upgrade his standards and experiment of potentially good ingredients and dishes. This will exercise his mind and maintain in him a thinking person. He should always practice creativity and resourcefulness. There would be numerous times during work that not everything you need would be at hand’s reach. It is during these very situations that a chef would be expected to be wise in practicing resourcefulness.

If a chef is armed with enough knowledge about health as well as the importance of staying healthy, it will be easier for him to make healthy choices and practices a habit. Once a chef is used to living a healthy lifestyle, it would be second nature for him to make wise decisions when he is faced with nutritional dilemmas. A healthy and wise chef will be able to prepare dishes brimming with both health and mouth-watering goodness.

Health and wisdom go hand in hand, especially for chefs like us. A healthy person could only make the right decisions. We cannot just execute and perform daily works and routines if we are not mentally, emotionally and physically healthy. If we cannot at all work, how are we going to practice our wisdom?

Furthermore, wisdom can make us healthy and stay as such. Wisdom will surely help us make the right decisions regarding our health, and even that of our customers. We will then feel healthier and wiser knowing that we have helped not only ourselves but others too – I think that is the most important thing to consider.

Stay wise and healthy!
