Healthy Chemistry
Do you like this post?
You know, I love it when I read something positive about food and its impact on the health of us humans, especially when the food is something more decadent than healthy. Take dark chocolate and red wine, how much more decadent than that can you get!
The resveratrol found in wine is being promoted as a metabolism booster: when you consume wine containing resveratrol your body burn calories more quickly or more accurately, more inefficiently; gotta love that! It is also an antioxidant which limits the damage to cells that free radicals and oxidative products of metabolism can do. Free radicals are the charged molecular particles that are formed during the breakdown of substances in our body as it is converting larger molecules we consume as food into the smaller building blocks for building up the body & fueling the living processes.
Dark chocolate contributes to our better health through its antioxidant chemicals, polyphenols. These are molecules that have the capability of “grabbing” onto charged particles, and, by essentially neutralizing the charge and rendering them non-harmful. Nuts like almonds and walnuts have been getting lots of great press lately especially as snacks for those trying to control their weight. The blend of protein and fat provide satiety or the feeling of fullness—i.e. suppress the urge to eat and Eat and EAT! Which I know all too well.
The fat found in most nuts is the less bad for you monounsaturated kind. And I will write about fats and their characteristics in another posting as there is way too much to cover in what is left for this posting. Oh yeah, all those super fruits which nobody has ever heard of before and the health-providing compounds they provide. These again are primarily antioxidant, free radical quenchers.
I just hope most of them taste better that Acai berries which I find pretty bland and bitter. Guess I could soak them in red wine, coat them in dark chocolate and roll them in chopped almonds.
WOW!!! Now that is healthy food!
