Part One

Stress is always present in everyday life and it is unavoidable. Just a simple walk around your garden or a thought of what to wear for tomorrow can be stressful. This kind of stress is normal and endurable as compared to other stresses that need an overnight sleep or so to refresh you and regain the strength you lost.

But how do you handle stress when it becomes unbearable? Too much worry about anything added up with fatigue due to lack of sleep can bring you at risk. This is very common at workplaces.

People who experience it need enough rest and relaxation to regain the strength they lost. Usually, they need a leave from work to do that. While on a leave, others still think of the work they have left at the office. They seem to worry while in the process of recovering or instead of relaxing and recharging their mind and body. Thus, such could possibly worsen their condition.

Remember, worrying about what to worry causes stress and is bad for you. So stop worrying – never worry a lot.

Different individuals have their ways of coping with stress. They release the inner tension in their systems by engaging in activities they feel free to do. These activities are usually free from interferences or demands of a boss in work, or of a professor in school. These are the activities that do not require deadlines or are pressure-free. Some find release by eating sweets; others give it a cry or convert stress into fruitful things instead of nursing it and minding much about it.

Each has his own way of handling stressful situations and in most cases, in a form of relaxing the body, mind, and soul.

Here are tips on how to beat the stress of today’s problems.

  • Admit your fears and know them. There is truth to the saying that what we have to fear most is the fear itself. We do fear such because it is unknown. We do not know what problem to face and therefore we do not know what solution to apply. We fear double, we fear twice. Problems do not have to be such terrible things. They have often been said by highly successful people that there are no obstacles in life, only challenges. So face, meet and beat these challenges.
  • Look at your problems and worries as opportunities and challenges which require immediate action. Like the tough question in an examination, do not waste time with a problem too long without solving it. Proceed to something else and return to it later. A fresh renewed approach often creates wonders and better results.
  • When you are unmistakably warned by the pressure gauge’s alarm, don’t bury your head in the sand. It is not “all in your mind” and will not go away if you ignore it. The gauge rarely makes mistakes; instant action can avert real trouble.
  • Develop a close friend with whom you can discuss your problems. The human mind can burst like an over-inflated balloon if it is stuffed with too much worry. Talking your troubles over with an uninvolved and much trusted friend can release your tension.
  • Be prepared. This keeps you from hurrying. See to it that you avoid having your problems escalate to the point where they hit you all at once. Careful regulation of your schedule allows you to have regular periods of quiet.
  • Unwind. All work and no play do not only make you dull but also sick. This rule applies to everybody. Take time out for fun hobbies, or any form of leisure that you find relaxes you. It is essential if you are to wind down.
  • Outside interests are important. One psychologist explains: “Don’t discount the value of a purpose or cause. It will bring mountains of motivation.” Being apart from the usual things and circumstances can release a lot of pressure on that gauge.

So next time you are facing a stressful situation, just take a deep breath, relax, and smile.
