People who get paid to conduct profession are called professionals. They follow a code of ethics set down by business law, morals, public policy, and even rules set by the sponsoring organization. Professionals are considered leaders in their own chosen industry. As to ours, we are regarded as the chief of several tasks and the captain of the kitchen. We are also the ones who manage the day’s activities of cooking, supervision, administration and a lot more.
Indeed, we are in this position because we work hard for it. Two decades of our lives are spent in studying and learning just to eventually get a title and earn a degree. After all, it is worthy to think that sacrifices are all paid for. In our professional world, integrity and independence are very essential. With such, few of the vast advices on how you can maintain and project a professional image that you really possess are given below:
- Stand up and stand out. Hey! I do not mean you have to literally stand all the time at work so everybody will notice you or your subordinates will see you. People have different principles and beliefs that may result to different opinions. As a professional, we should not allow disagreements to our team especially if we are to lead them. To stand up for the things you know and think is right are good enough but standing up for the benefits of the majority is exceptional. With these, you will unconsciously be standing out; you definitely win the trust and earn such respect from people around you.
- Be careful and wise. This applies mainly to decision making. Professionals are trusted by the public, and so we should make decisions unselfishly without any biases or personal motives. We should bear in mind and prioritize the welfare of the majority and for the common good. Though we have different ways of ruling a team, it must be necessary to be sensible in other people’s opinions especially when disagreement, argument or conflict arises. Aside from that, we should also be cautious of what comes from our mouth. Use words courteously and answer questions clearly and pleasantly. Truly, these are the things that you can never retrieve and take back.
- Be the good influence. A chef like you should encourage and motivate your subordinates to function and execute tasks and duties accordingly and properly. Members of a certain team usually admire a professional in the industry. Not to impress everyone, but one must acquire the characteristics of an influential leader to establish the professional image he wants to maintain.
- Do not stop learning. Life does not stops, so are we. Learning does not end in the four corners of the classroom. Countless experiences and continuous trainings are important to pursue our eagerness to learn new things and grab the latest ideas in dining matters. Also, a professional should update himself to innovation and development in the food industry.
- Have a good posture and grooming. Aside from the interpersonal and personality development mentioned above, one should consider the fact that people normally judge a person by their physical appearance. Therefore, to earn the good impression of others, you should dress well and look decent. Fix your hair that fits your personality. Do not forget to use perfume to smell good. Wear proper attire or uniform that is clean and well managed. Shoes must be on its shiniest moment! Whatever the formality level is, there is one rule that can never be broken: be clean and neat all the time.
Being a professional is already an achievement. A professional image is an element of your credibility. Without reliability and credibility, winning is an uphill battle. We should take care of it by maintaining our good disposition in our work. So, project that professional image in you that no one can ever steal and take away from you.
