It is true; kids and veggies do not mix.
If you have kids, you will find out that getting them to eat vegetables is going to be one tough job. Why would they choose to eat green leafy things anyway when they could eat pizza, ice cream, burgers, and the likes if they want to, right?
However, this is one way of thinking that you have to change in your children. After all, you would naturally want them to be healthy and to grow up loving healthy foods. If this is truly what you want, then you have to start changing their mindset now.
Difficulty of Getting Your Kids to Like Veggies
The parents themselves are the biggest factor why it is so difficult to make their own children eat vegetables, especially if both parents are working. You may think this is unfair, but this is true. Look at it this way. If both of you have full-time jobs, then, most probably, there will not be enough time for you to cook meals at home particularly since you are both tired from work. More often than not, busy parents would rather have their meals delivered by restaurants, most especially fast food restaurants. Because of this, the children learn to love restaurant food more than homemade meals.
The children themselves are also a factor. Because they have learned to appreciate fast food meals, they would sometimes throw temper tantrums if their parents would not grant their wishes. To shut them up, the parents give in to their demands.
Taking Action
Fortunately, the government as well as multiple organizations are promoting healthier food choices for children. In fact, the First Lady made children’s nutrition one of her personal missions. She wants to promote changes in the way school cafeterias are cooking the children’s meals. Fighting obesity herself when she was a child, she now wants to give children and adults the chance to choose delicious yet nutritious meals.
Restaurants, too, are also now becoming more aware of the need to provide healthier food choices not only to their guests but most especially to children. Television cooking shows are also highlighting the importance of children’s nutrition.
The food trends for this year, 2011, also showed that more and more people are becoming aware of the need to provide very nutritious foods to the children. Per the surveys, there will be more awareness for nutritious foods, and the healthy cooking fad for children will only grow more.
What You Can Do
As a chef, you need to get yourself educated about children’s nutrition. You can take short lessons, or you can visit websites. There are websites right now that give advices and tips on what children need in terms of food. Aside from these, they also give healthy recipes that are perfect for children. Not only are these recipes healthy, but they are delicious, too.
Now, if you have kids on your own and want to get them started on a healthy diet, you can also visit these websites. They will teach you about what to give and what not to give your children. The websites will also teach you cooking tips, an example of which is to grill meat rather than deep-fry them.
If your children love fast-food meals, you need to choose the restaurant wisely. Fortunately, there are also websites that suggest which restaurants to take the children to if they want to dine out. Aside from this, the websites also teach parents how to slowly but firmly steer their children away from unhealthy fast-food choices.
Of course, the parents themselves have to be good examples to their children, so if you want healthy food choices for your children, you should also start eating healthy foods as well.
