Moving a Cart Properly

As service personnel in charge of cleanliness, you will be expected to carry a lot of things to keep the kitchen area tidy. The tool that is most useful to you is your cart. The cart will allow you to carry a lot of heavy equipment and garbage containers. Proper use of the cart should be a primary concern to avoid injury and damaging the machines you are carrying.
Moving a cart is simple, but you should know some techniques to help you carry your task optimally.
Here are some tips that you must remember when dealing with carts.
1. Push rather than pull.
The principle behind this is body weight and gravity. When pushing you won’t strain your arms because you are putting your body weight to help move the cart.
2. Spread feet wide, one in front of the other with your front knee bent.
Make sure that your center of gravity is solid. This is great for balance and strength when pushing the cart. Plus it makes your knees less prone to injury.
3. Keep back straight.
This is essential to the well-being of your back. This also adds balance to your center of gravity.
4. Slowly push into the cart with your body weight, using your leg muscles to do much of the pushing.
This procedure relies heavily on body weight and gravity to easily push the cart where ever you want. Do not push using your arms. It is much more effective to push using leg power.
5. Push slowly and smoothly. Avoid sudden motions or twisting your back.
You are carrying heavy loads. That is the main reason why you are using a cart. Sudden motion like twisting your back can cause injuries and can cause you to lose control. Take care of your back all the time and keep your focus on the cart.
6. Be wary of loose parts when moving appliances and machinery.
Loose parts can cause serious problems when you are carting off heavy loads of machinery. Be sure to check the machine if it has any parts that can come off during transfers. Tripping over loose parts is a big possibility if you do not check for it.
7. Clean up build ups when carting appliances and machinery.
Dirt and build up of grease can also be as dangerous as tripping over loose parts. Be wary of this and as much as possible clean up the equipment before even thinking of moving it.
Avoid injury to yourself and the equipment
Carting out large equipment can be as easy as A-B-C when you know what you are doing.
Just remember that to avoid injury, you always have to be vigilant and follow the operations manual and hotel standards. These rules were made so that the employee can maximize his production as member of the team.
Always keep in mind that your well-being and the safety of the machinery and equipment that you are carting is the paramount concern of the team management.
