It will happen that a restaurant will have a picky eater for a guest, may it be an adult or a child. It would have been okay if the picky eater already knew what he wanted to eat before he went inside the restaurant, but if he still has to go over the menu and choose something that will catch his fancy, now, that is going to be a bit of a problem. The picky eater almost always has questions, and if they are not answered to his liking, then that leaves you a somewhat disgruntled guest.
So, as a chef, what can you do to address the needs of a picky eater?
Give Them a Lot of Options
As a chef who wants to please his picky eaters, you can do so by giving them a lot of food choices. There are some restaurants that have buffet table services wherein all the guests have to do is to choose which food catches their fancy. If you do not have such service, then you can try setting up a small salad bar wherein the guests could easily choose what goes into their salads. Breakfast buffet tables also work, and if you want to make them more interesting, then why not set up a create-your-own-omelet station.
However, if you do not want the buffet style, then you could try adding in a nibble tray to your menu. In fact, this will work perfectly well for kids. You can creatively arrange colorful bite-size portions of fruits and veggies on an equally interesting nibble tray, and you can give the nibble tray a playful and interesting name to catch their attention.
As for adults, an interestingly and playfully named nibble tray will not work, of course. What you can do then is to teach your waiters and waitresses how to describe each of the menus in a very appetizing manner. That way, when the adult picky eater asks them what is on the menu, they could provide an appropriate answer that will entice the picky eater to order from the menu.
Understanding the Picky Eaters
It is normal for a child to be a picky eater. Children prefer sweet and salty foods rather than veggies and fruits, and they also prefer them fried rather than broiled dishes. Because of this, feeding a picky eater becomes a tough job. For this reason, it would not hurt the chef and the restaurant to look for recipes that a picky eater will love, just make sure though that they are nutritious and healthy for the children. Plus, make sure that you give them a very interesting plate presentation as children are normally drawn to colorful and creative things.
However, it is going to be a very different story though for adult picky eaters. They are not and will never be satisfied that easily, nor can you easily trick them into eating a playfully named meal artfully prepared on a plate. For this reason, you have to prepare yourself for some criticisms. You have to have more patience and tolerance, especially when it comes to the questions they ask. You also have to have some ready answers in case he asks if you can cook him a special meal that is not in the usual menu.
