Road Trip 08/ 08
The beginning…………
15th August, 2008
Chengdu to Guangzhou
Sorry for the delay in the publication of this article however, I was experiencing technical issues with my camera.
They said because of the Olympics you need to be at the airport 2 hours prior to the departure time. Even for domestic flights that originate 2065km from the Olympic flame going to a city 1887km away from the Olympic city.
I was ready but they weren’t……..
The roadway to the departure terminal was blocked; the taxi driver had to maneuver around the witches’ hats and the NO ENTRY sign.
Made it to the front of the terminal building and believe it or not the baggage trolleys were firmly secured with about 200 metres of padlocked chain.
I finally unleashed a trolley, made my way to the check-in counter. Had a speedy check-in by the way with my 35.5kg neatly packed in two bags. I took some advice from Chef Shane B. The Culinary Globetrotter.
I managed to divert the attention of the attendant by establishing a conversation with my limited Mandarin language skills. Well I can confirm you that it worked- I got away with it and did not have to pay for the 15.5kg of excess baggage.
Laptop out of the bag, belt and shoes off I made it through the security check point without issue.
I ventured to one of the F&B outlets and ordered a watermelon juice and a club sandwich. Arrrrrh the club sandwich arrived, probably the world’s smallest.
Recipe- Club Sandwich
Ingredients
White Bread- 2 slices 60 x 60mm
Salted Butter- 40gram
Tomato- 2 slices
Romaine Lettuce- 1 small leaf
Undrained Pickled Cucumber- 2 thin slices
Processed Ham- 2 chunks- 20 x 30 x 10mm
Undrained Tuna Flakes in Spring Water- 10 gram
Method
Self Explanatory
To serve
4 tooth picks and 1 side plate
Pictured- Sorry but by the time I got to writing this section of the article I had eaten the other two points.
Price- 45RMB/ 7USD- approximately
Along with my 35RMB watermelon juice the overall breakfast tab was a little on the high side.
I am just wondering if the toothpicks were recycled……………
PS- Stay tuned for regular articles focusing on some of the highlights from my current road trip. A lot of it may be useless information however; you never know what might pop up over the next couple of weeks.
PSS- I have a habit of checking the cleanliness of sugar bowls. You know the dish used to house the sugar sachets.
I have to admit that the establishment that served the infamous club sandwich got the thumbs up in the area of sugar bowl cleaning.
