S. Pellegrino World’s 50 Best Restaurants 2009
Do you like this post?
Everyone in the culinary industry has probably heard of the S. Pellegrino World’s 50 Best Restaurants. It is an event that all chefs would like to someday participate in. It is a recognized event in the industry where the world’s 50 best chefs gather to receive their awards – or the awards for their restaurants. This event recognizes the best places to eat. Not surprisingly, you will find people in the culinary industry fervently debating and arguing over restaurants and chefs. This inspires excitement over culinary practitioners who aspire to be included in the list.
Indeed, this ceremony brings tremendous interest to the restaurant industry. It has become a highly anticipated annual occasion. People await the series of announcements and wonders, “Who made it on the list?” The global media is on to this announcement and the actual awarding ceremony draws chefs and restaurateurs from all over the globe.
The Compilation of the List
It is hard to be included in that list. It is created by The Nespresso World’s 50 Best Academy. This group is made up of culinary experts and food critics and writers. Each of these experts represents a certain region. A global region will generally have its own panel and a panel chairman. The panel will draw up their regional list and then accordingly make their votes. Needless to say, practically all of the world’s regions are represented in the master list.
2009 S. Pellegrino World’s 50 Best Restaurants
Once again, the world’s best chefs and restaurateurs will gather in this year’s S. Pellegrino World’s 50 Best Restaurants. Many will come to London to find out which restaurant will win the most coveted spot. Will it be El Bulli once again? Will Joel Robuchon – the chef with the most Michelin stars – and his restaurant take the highest spot this time? Robuchon along Heston Blumenthal, Ferran Adria and Tetsuya Wakuda are just a few of the world’s best chefs who will be attending the occasion at Freemason’s Hall on the 20th of April. The Lifetime Achievement Award and the Chef’s Choice Award will also be awarded.
Fergus Henderson and the Pig’s Head
Fergus Henderson will be preparing the food for the 50 greatest chefs with exceptional palates to match. Henderson is quite known for his unusual choice of ingredients – and the rest of his colleagues will now know just why for they are in for a treat. He will be preparing his signature dish – pig’s head and potato pie. Not everyone is likely looking forward to this dish, but it is one of the highlights of the event. Fortunately – or unfortunately, for Gordon Ramsay, after the fiasco this weekend where he was criticized for preparing meals in bulk and transporting them to various London restaurants, he will not be attending this year’s ceremony. He may have to take a rain check on Henderson’s dishes for now.

My dinner at el Bulli was (and probably will remain) the most memorable dining experience in my lifetime. With the added exposure of having the “best restaurant” for the fifth year in a row, and the his recent book, my chances of ever returning are a snowball’s chance in hell. My consolation is that I have 49 other stellar places to choose from! http://imoralist.blogspot.com/2008/07/dinner-at-el-bulli-experience-part-2-of.html
