For a person who has a food allergy, it is not the food itself that is dangerous but the reactions made by the body towards the food.

There are no other ways to beat a food allergy but to avoid foods related to the allergy itself. The first thing to do is to know what kind of food allergy you have. By the time symptoms show up, make a dietary diary so that when the doctor asks you what you have eaten before the reactions have appeared. Often, food intolerance and food poisoning are confused as food allergy for they have the same symptoms.

Food intolerance is the state of the person where his body lacks the ability to endure a certain kind of substance. Food poisoning is the state of the body where bacteria infiltrate your body through the food. On the other hand, food allergy is brought about by mistake of the immune system. The immune system mistakenly considers a food protein harmful though it is really not.

There are foods in which allergy often occurs. These are milk, egg, fish, shellfish, peanuts, tree nuts, soy and wheat. Once you have figured it out, all you have to do is to prevent or avoid eating foods with that kind of ingredients. However, it is not necessary to avoid foods that you like. Hence, there are ingredients that can be used to substitute the harmful ones.

o Milks can be substituted by the same amount of water or fruit juice.
o Eggs can be substituted by 1 teaspoon of baking powder, 1 tablespoon of liquid, and 1 tablespoon of vinegar or 1 ½ tablespoons of water, 1 ½ tablespoons of oil, and 1 teaspoon of baking powder or 1 packet of gelatin and 2 tablespoon of warm water.
o Wheat can be substituted by any of the following:
1. 7/8 cup of rice flour
2. 5/8 cup of potato starch flour
3. 1 cup of soy flour and ¼ cup of potato starch flour
4. 1 cup of corn flour

On the other hand, for other ingredients that cannot be substituted, there is nothing you can do but to avoid foods, which have that certain ingredient.

There are also products that may contain hidden allergens. And these are few of those that you need to be very aware of:

o Some canned tuna contain casein, a milk product.
o Restaurants mainly put butter on their recipe to add flavor.
o On specialty shops or cafes, eggs are used to create foam or milk on the topping of coffee.
o Eggs may be used in processing pasta.
o Artificial nuts can be a de-flavored peanut
o Many sunflower seeds are produced on equipment shared with the other kinds of nuts and peanuts.
o Fish protein can be airborne while frying.

Most patients are prescribed by the doctor to bring epinephrine or EpiPen or Twinject along the way, so that in case of any allergic reactions, they can be injected. There are now antihistamines available in the market; however, it must not be taken before the reaction takes place.

There is also medical jewelry that can be used as an early warning device of an allergic person. Still, avoiding the allergen is the best and the cheapest way to treat food allergy. Be reminded that there are cases that allergic persons outgrow their allergy. So, never worry that much to the extent that you tend to deprive yourself of eating what you think you are healthy and good for you.

Guidance from your parents, teachers and principal is needed. They are the ones who will take care of you when you suddenly have an allergic reaction. But more than anyone else, you should know self-discipline and the courage to say no to someone who offers you to eat something that seems to be delicious but dangerous to your health.
