With the increasing awareness about the Greenhouse Effect, various environmental terminologies have been coined. One of the most popular terms these days is carbon footprint. But what does this mean?
An Introduction to Carbon Footprint
When people speak of carbon footprints, they basically refer to the contributory Greenhouse gasses emitted by an individual or organization. It is also define as the carbon dioxide emission attributable to a particular individual within one year period. Often, this term is confused with ecological footprint. The latter term is more encompassing. It embraces the term carbon footprint. Basically, this latter term refers to the land and water that an individual requires to survive. This basically refers to the different kind of human consumptions – services, goods, food, services and carbon.
Ways to Reduce Carbon Footprint
There are various ways to reduce carbon footprints. Some of these methods are discussed below.
If you want to reduce your carbon contribution, one of the simplest methods is to change your diet. If you eat a lot of meat, you should convert into a more vegetarian diet because this is more environmentally friendly. If you can’t do away with meat, at least reduce your meat consumption significantly. There are many environmental considerations when it comes to meat diet. You need to consider the carbon wastages and gasses attributed to processing and transportation of meat.
Another way of reducing your environmental footprint is to purchase locally produced fresh foods. It is also better if you would opt for organically produced fruits and vegetables. This will eliminate carbon emission and gasses resulting from packaging and transportation.
There are still many other ways that you can do in order to eliminate or reduce your ecological footprint. For instance, if you are going to purchase a house, make sure that it’s faced toward the sun for heating during the winter and cooling during the summer. You should consider placing rooftop gardens, water efficient fixtures and all other green features. Doing these things will eliminate or reduce carbon emissions.
Your carbon footprint can be further eliminated by adopting a more environmentally-friendly driving habits. Do not accelerate or decelerate when you don’t have to. Do not use your air conditioner or your car lights if you don’t need to.
