The media has made the culinary profession all the more popular with its food shows and programs that introduce successful and popular international chefs. Aside from this, there are also the numerous reality shows featuring wannabe chefs. Because of this, more and more people are getting interested in the culinary profession. If you are one of them, then read on.
Not Just About Skill
One thing that you have to remember when it comes to the culinary profession is that it is not just about having the taste buds and the nose to know what tastes and smells good. In fact, you will need more than your senses to be a successful chef.
For one, you will need to be creative when it comes to plating your food. It would not matter that much if your food tastes delicious if it is not appetizing to the eye. These two go hand in hand. Present an appetizing dish, and the customer will automatically think that it tastes just as appetizing as well.
Two, let us say that you have the necessary skills to cook really good food and also have the creative eye to plate your food well. The question is, will these give you the edge you need over the competition?
The Edge You Just Might Need
Short of becoming known simply as a “cook,” you can take advantage that culinary schools offer. Here are some of the advantages that culinary schools can give you:
- Teach you more about international culinary cuisines, especially about the ingredients as well as the cooking theories and techniques of each.
- Teach and encourage you how to be more creative and artistic.
- Give you good credentials and certificates to show to your future employers.
- Give you the edge over other applicants.
- Shows your future employers that you are committed and passionate about your profession.
Before you enroll at one though, you should know the difference between cooking classes, cooking schools, and culinary institutes.
Cooking classes are simply short seminars that can range anywhere from a couple of days to a couple of months. You will not receive any diplomas or certificates here; however, you can enroll at one to broaden your culinary views.
Cooking schools, on the other hand, give diplomas and certificates to their students. A cooking class typically ranges from a couple of months to about four years. Here, you will receive specialized culinary training.
Lastly, culinary institutes are perfect for those who want to become certified culinary professionals as the programs here provide cream-of-the-crop training and education to its students. Like cooking schools, you will also receive diplomas and certificates here as well as degrees (associates, bachelor’s, master’s, and doctorate’s).
Tips in Choosing a Good Culinary School
There are a lot of culinary schools out there, and they all differ in terms of their approaches to training their students as well as the culinary programs they offer. So if you are thinking of enrolling in one, then here are some tips to get you started on your search for the right culinary school.
- Know what you want and choose culinary schools that can match your interests.
- Once you have a list of culinary schools to choose from, check and see if they are accredited.
- After narrowing down the list, compare their curriculum, culinary programs, and course descriptions. It would also not hurt to check and see if their class schedules are flexible, especially if you have a job. It would also be to your advantage to know if they have externship opportunities to help you get started on your career.
- You can also visit the cooking schools where you can get a firsthand look at how they teach their students. While there, you should also take the time to talk with some of the students as well as the teachers. This can also give you a good gauge of the number of students that find work after graduating at the school.
Of course, you always have the option of training on the job; however, what you will learn here is very limited to what you will learn at cooking schools and institutes. You will only get to learn the usual techniques and approaches that the restaurant or the café utilize, and when you go out there to look for a better job, you will more often than not land lower position jobs than you would get if you are a graduate of a cooking school.
