Work Safety – Dealing with Electrocution

The kitchen is one of the busiest places in any hotel or restaurant. Part of the kitchen that you should watch out for is spillages, open fires, and electronic gadgets. Electronic appliances are now an integral part of an optimal kitchen experience. That is why electrocution should also be on the watch list of things to prevent and avoid.
The most common types of electrocution are more surprising than deadly. Still, you want to avoid electrocution by making sure you are wearing safety shoes and gloves. Plus, you want to handle electronic equipment with dry hands.
Here are things you can watch out for when dealing with electronics and electrocution.
1. Avoid prolonged exposure to electricity.
Remember that long term exposure to electricity, electrocution in general, can cause the body’s electrical impulses to go haywire. The heart and the brain can be affected. I suggest that you do not rush to help someone, see number 3, but if you can turn off the source of electricity at once.
2. Prolonged exposure to electricity can cause burns to the skin and the tissues.
When you have burns caused by electricity, be ready to get your first aid kit. Make sure that you have a lot of bandages and burn ointments in your kit. Do not touch the burn if you think it is already in the third degree.
3. Do not rush to assist someone who is electrocuted.
In the interest of avoiding prolonged exposure to electrocution, you have to act fast, but not careless. Watch and assess the situation. Look at the person and locate the source of the electricity. Do not touch the victim with your bare hands because people are good conductors of electricity.
4. Turn off the main source of electricity at once if you want to help an electrocuted person.
You can look at the situation and decide how to deal with it. Now you have to find the main source of electricity. Obviously, most of the time, the source of the current is the electrical sockets. Find some non-conductive materials like wood or rubber to separate the victim from the source of the electricity.
5. Call your local emergency response team when dealing with electrocution.
This is the first thing that you must do after you have separated the victim from the source of electricity. The damage may vary, but only a trained medical expert can know the extent of the injury.
6. In case of electrocution, be ready to perform CPR.
CPR training must be paramount for every kitchen personnel. Sometimes the local emergency response team can get tied up. The best thing you have to do when the victim’s heart stops is to perform CPR. You can look up hundreds of web pages about CPR, but formal training should be the primary consideration.
In any case, electrocution is a very dangerous matter. Knowing some information about it and knowledge about CPR can minimize the risk of casualties. Always, prevention is better than the cure. So you better wear your protective gear and treat electronic equipment with respect and care.
